Great Mewstone From Peg 2 Greeting Card
Great Mewstone From Peg 2
The scene is from Peg 2 of the Wood Drive on the Langdon Barton Shoot overlooking Wembury Bay and the Great Mewstone. Rare and privileged is it to shoot overlooking the sea with such a beautiful backdrop.
The Great Mewstone (or Mew Stone) sits half a mile off of Wembury Point in Wembury Bay on the South-Eastern approach to Plymouth Sound, Devon. One of the largest islands off the South West Coast it is home to a colony of seals and plethora bird species.
In 1744 a man was banished to the Mewstone, his daughter, Black Joan, remained on the stone raising three children. Later in 1833 Samuel Wakeham and his wife set up home on the stone to avoid deportation to Australia. On a clear day, their hut can still be seen.
